Learning Environmements

Artifact: Backyard Ecosystem Adventure

Description: This is an asynchronous module designed for a ninth-grade biology course. It is built in Articulate Rise using high-quality images, interactive elements, and a cheeky story to keep the learner engaged.

Rationale: This artifact demonstrates my ability to create a learning environment suited specifically to a learner or group of learners. We wanted to build an engaging story-driven instructional element that can be used in their own backyard while exploring the world around them. This was accomplished by using Articulate Rise as an authoring tool. The module can be readily accessed through desktop or mobile phone and includes brief exercises and a final quiz to assess the learner.

Artifact: Learning Environment Conversion for COVID 19

Description: Journalism 336 is traditionally a synchronous in-person course. Due to COVID19, the course was modified from the existing learning environment to an online-only synchronous learning environment with asynchronous activities.

Rationale: This course needed to be adapted to an online-only learning environment during a two-week extended spring break. I was the sole designer, instructor, and SME for this project. While Canvas wasn’t required, it is the LMS approved and provided by the University’s central IT department. As a traditional in-person class, the challenge was to build an engaging and collaborative workspace for students to create videos and discuss concepts. Using Canvas discussion boards and UDL principles, I gave students the opportunity to submit creative work however they preferred (Video, photo, written, audio) and promoted discussion in the space. This was the first time some students used canvas assignments and discussion boards. Care and attention were given to the redesign as most students were caught off-guard by the mid-semester course modality shift.
